1998 Nelsonville-York Buckeyes 29 Trimble Tomcats 25
Week 5
Location: Boston Field, Nelsonville, Ohio
Coaches: Nelsonville-York - Kevin Meade, Trimble Phil Faires
Series Record: NYHS 19 THS 8 Ties 2
Through the 1990's the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes dominated the series with Trimble.  Many of those years, the Buckeye victory came in blow-out fashion against an over-matched Tomcat team.  The 1998 game stands out as two very good teams that came together for a classic match-up.  Trimble entered the game undefeated, and Nelsonville-York had a lone five point loss to Logan as the blemish on their record.  After a punt on Trimble's first possession, Eric Glass sprinted 32 yards for the first score of the game on the Buckeye's first offensive play.  Trimble's Brady Trace immediately answered with a 74-yard run that tied the score at seven.  Glass then scored on a four yard run to end the scoring for the first quarter.  Brady Trace scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter to raise the score to 14-13.  As the half was ending, Tomcat running back Rob Cooper scored from two yards out to give the Tomcats a 19-14 half time lead.  Both teams were scoreless in the third quarter.  Buckeye Flint Smathers reclaimed the lead for Nelsonville-York on a 14-yard pass from Ben Robey, who then added the two-point conversion to make the score 22-13.  The next possession, Buckeye Trey Wilson picked off a pass and returned it to the Tomcats six.  The Bucks then seemed to pull out to an insurmountable lead when Matt McKinney scored from two-yards away for a 29-13 lead.  Trimble went to their five-wide hurry up offense, and Trace found Cody McCoy for a four yard touchdown pass with 2:46 to go.  After the next kickoff, the Buckeyes seemed to only need a first down to run the clock out.  They accomplish the goal of the first down, but with 15 seconds left in the game a fumbled quarterback/center exchange gave Trimble one last hope.  Two desperation pass ensued, and when the second one fell incomplete, Nelsonville-York claimed their 9th consecutive victory over the Tomcats.
