| For the second straight season, league title hopes hung in the balance of the outcome of the Trimble/Nelsonville-York game. After a league loss by Vinton County, the Buckeyes knew if they could take care of business against the ‘Cats, they could tie for the title. The old saying is “defense wins championships” and Nelsonville-York’s defense rose to the occasion, held Trimble to under 100 total yards, and got their championship. Early in the first quarter, Glen Flores broke 32 yards for the first score of the game. With 8:47 left in the opening stanza, the Buckeyes were ahead 7-0. Before the first quarter ended, Nelsonville-York extended their lead to 14-0 on a one-yard Ryan Mitchell run. Mitchell scored the only touchdown of the second quarter, and Nelsonville-York was up 21-0 at the half. Late in the third quarter Brian Withem scored the game’s final touchdown from a yard away to make the final score 27-0. Nelsonville-York’s Casey Nungester was the game’s leading rusher hauling the ball 10 times for 102 yards. John Corwin recorded three interceptions in the contest. The Buckeyes end their season 7-3 (7-1 in the league) and the Tomcats finish 4-6 (4-4 in the league).
