The 1984 Trimble Tomcats entered the final game of the season with a shot at the TVC title. A win over the Buckeyes paired with a Belpre loss would give the 'Cats a share of the league crown. For three scoreless quarter Trimble waited for the break that could give them the game. It came in an unlikely form. In the fourth quarter Nelsonville-York's Brian Smathers intercepted a pass to end a Trimble drive at the Buckeye 20 yard line. The Bucks then drove to the Tomcat nine where the 'Cats held. On the second play of the drive Trimble's Mark Campbell, a part-time running back, part-time receiver took the handoff on a draw play and raced 90-yards for the first score of the game. A Jeff Koons extra-point made the score 7-0. Nelsonville-York came right back and Ryan McClain scored from four yards away. With 6:32 left in the game Coach Boston decided to go for the win, but was unsuccessful when the Tomcat defense sacked quarterback Pat Bohyer. With plenty of time left in the game, both teams had opportunities. A Trimble chance to expand their lead ended with a Jay Kline interception, and Jimmy Holbert for the Tomcats sealed the Buckeye's fate by intercepting a pass in the endzone with 26 seconds left in the game. The Tomcats had held up on their end, but TVC Championship dreams were dashed when it was learned that Belpre had won and finished the season with a perfect league record.
