| On the first possession of the game the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes methodically moved the ball 79 yards on ten plays. They capped the drive with the first of Dave Sufronko's three touchdown performance. Covering the first four minutes of the game, Sufronko scored from nine yards away to open the scoring. When the Tomcats took over, Quarterback Kevin Meade dropped back to pass and had a wide-open Jeff McClelland streaking through the middle of the Buckeye defense, the pass was overthrown. On the next play, Meade had Greg Holbert open across the middle, but it to fell incomplete. This was the theme of the ballgame, a bigger Buckeye team wearing down a smaller Tomcat team, that just couldn't spark the big plays they needed. Sufronko upped the Nelsonville-York lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when he hit paydirt from one yard away. Trimble opened the second half receiving the kick and marched the ball down to the Buckeye three yard line where Jeff McClelland put Trimble on the board and cut the lead to 14-6. The following drive the methodical Buckeyes started another long drive, this time of 80 yards, that concluded with Sufronko bursting 20 yards for the score. After the ensuing kick the Tomcats drove to the Nelsonville-York 16 yard line where they faced a fourth and five. Trimble's comeback bid ended there when Meade was sacked for a 10 yard loss.
